Dancing Raisins Experiment

Can raisins really dance? With a little soda and science—yes, they can!

Materials Needed:

  • Clear soda (like Sprite or 7-Up)
  • A few raisins
  • A clear cup or glass

Steps:

1. Pour the Soda

Fill the cup about ¾ full with clear soda. Let the bubbles settle slightly, but keep some fizz.

2. Add the Raisins

Drop 4–6 raisins gently into the soda.

3. Watch the Magic!

In just a few moments, the raisins will start to rise and fall—almost like they’re dancing! This fizzy fun can last several minutes.

4. Talk About What’s Happening

  • The carbonation (carbon dioxide gas) clings to the raisins’ wrinkly surfaces.
  • As bubbles build up, they lift the raisins upward.
  • When the bubbles pop at the surface, the raisins sink again.
  • This cycle continues, making them dance!

Science Behind It:

This hands-on activity is a playful way to learn about:

  • Buoyancy – how objects float or sink
  • Density – how heavy something is compared to its size
  • Gas behavior – how carbonation affects movement in a liquid

It’s a bubbly, giggly way to get curious about science—and it’s kid-approved!

Scroll through the photos below to see the experiment in action! From the fizz to the giggles, it’s a science memory in the making.
