What inspired you to get involved with the Children’s Museum?
Museums have been an important way for me to connect with community, place, and history my whole life. I have spent most of my adult life working in museums and science centers and they are truly special places for building meaning and memories. I have a young child now and I wanted to be a part of building new local museum experiences for her and all the other explorers here.
Can you share a favorite childhood memory that sparked your passion for Sarasota to have a children’s museum and you being a part of bringing that to reality?
As a child, I spent many hours experimenting and playing at my local science center, which is just another way to frame a children’s museum. They had this sewer exhibit that allowed you to experience what it was like to go down a manhole and crawl through a pipe and a sideways room. I always felt totally transported when I went in and I want those kind of immersive, perspective-changing moments for Sarasota kids!
What’s an interactive exhibit or educational program you would love to see at the museum, and why?
I would love to see a space for children to form connections between each element of STEAM and Sarasota’s human and natural environments. Building bridges surrounded by local examples. Creating art to represent living things and habitats unique to our region. Using math and technology to plan a neighborhood in Sarasota that has their favorite things. We need more deep place-based learning.
If you could have any superpower to help you in your role, what would it be and why?
I would be able to directly translate my thoughts into words, images, and objects! How easy would exhibit, event, and program creation be then?
What are your hobbies or special talents that might surprise people?
I love to carve rubber stamps and make prints. Lately my daughter and her friends have been helping, and we have been making even better art together! I also know how to taxidermy study skins for museum collections, pin insects, and prepare wet specimens.
If you could host a dinner party with any three characters from children’s books or movies, who would they be and why?
They would be Willy Wonka for the culinary influence, Babushka Baba Yaga for the parenting advice, and Ms. Frizzle for the conversation.
